Premier 7’s Finalists

Gallant Windsor Division 1 perform strongly in Premier 7s finals series

The Windsor Division 1 team did the Club proud over the weekend competing in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Premier 7s.  We all wish you congratulations and are so excited by your success.  Looking forward to another crack at it next year.

Saturday morning saw Windsor come up against the formidable West Toowoomba team which had gone through the season undefeated.  The Fours team (Raymond Bax, Kelly Gauntlett, Dave Keogh and Les Duvey) played strongly the entire game and ended up with a convincing 21 to 12 win.  Mardy Foster was on fire early in the singles but had to fight off a strong come-back by the West Toowoomba champion to eventually win 31 to 24.  The Pairs (Dan Keogh and Mick Cummins) always knew they had a battle on their hands after the second end when they were down 3 (with a resting toucher in the ditch, a toucher resting on top of the resting toucher and jack, and then a third bowl resting on the lot (see photo).  They fought the battle out to the end but eventually went down 16 to 23.  A great effort.  By lunch time our team was through to the semi-finals on Sunday.  That in itself was a sensational performance.

Sunday came along with similar conditions but maybe less of a breeze but the conditions were still tricky.  Windsor were favoured underdogs as they were the only non-Coast team in the semi-finals.  Our opposition was Burleigh Heads.  The team put in a great effort but at the end of the day they couldn’t quite get over the line.  Mick and Dan gave us a great start and jumped away to an early lead and lead all the way to end up convincing winners 22 to 10.  The Fours had a slow start and although they started to put in some great bowls Burleigh always came up with something better.  They weren’t disgraced in defeat and fought hard all the way but in the end Burleigh were too strong winning 25 to 7.  Mardy couldn’t reproduce the brilliant start of Saturday and trailed early.  Whilst putting in some big bowls he couldn’t bridge the early lead of the opposition and went down 31 to 12.  A great semi-final performance by a sensational Windsor Division 1 team.

Thanks to those supporters who managed to find their way to the Coast to barrack for the Windsor Wombats.  Your support is always appreciated by the players.

Whilst the Division 1 team was disappointed about the semi-final result they all know they put in a great effort and represented our Club professionally and strongly and once again have put Windsor on the bowls map.  Onwards and upwards for the Wombats!

Bring on the Pennant season.
