The 2nd Windsor 100 classic (Men’s Fours Carnival) was held on Saturday and Sunday 29/30 April. The weather gods smiled on Windsor this year with glorious weather for the 2 days – beautiful one day, perfect the next, as compared to the deluge last year where we had to play water bowls.
The perfect weather was matched or even bettered by some ‘classic bowls’. It was great competition all weekend with some excellent skilled bowls, accompanied by the friendliness of all competing. The Cry “Come On” rang out on numerous occasions around the greens like the Mexican wave as brilliant bowl after brilliant bowl tracked its way down the greens – arguably some of the best in Brisbane.
Once again the Power Play raised its devilish head with many a team brought back to earth by an unsuccessful call or a successful one by the opposition. It certainly led to plenty of uncertainty in the final outcome of each game. Best Power Play Round score of the weekend was 14 by Ray McKay’s side. Ray’s side had accumulated an unbelievable 28 points by Saturday evening and looked certainties to bag the $500 prize. The next best team at that stage was Greg Roll’s team with an impressive total of 20. On Sunday, Ray’s team only scored an additional 2 points, with Greg’s team scoring two 4s to attain an aggregate of 36 points over the weekend to take out the major Power Play prize money.
It is doubtful that anyone went hungry on either day. We were greeted with a gourmet morning tea followed by a delicious burger and chips for lunch on Saturday and then hot dogs and chips on the Sunday. Amongst all that, a sumptuous bacon and egg brekky was somehow squeezed in. And just to top it off crackers, cheese and kabana were provided whilst waiting for the final results. There were very little left-overs at the end of the weekend.
Going into the 5th (and last round) we still had 4 undefeated teams making it a tense struggle to the end. Finally, 2 teams remained undefeated with Ray McKay’s and his team (Col Kennedy, Robbie Day, Alan Howard) winning the $2,000 prize money with 10 game points and a plus 52 aggregate. 2nd place was taken out by Shaun Byrnes and his team (Steve McMillan, Ron Rothwell, Peter Tsoumbaras) with 10 game points and a plus 42 aggregate. Greg Roll’s team (Warren Birks, Tony Martin, Col Smith), who also won the Power Play, came in 3rd with 8 game points and a plus 50 aggregate. Steve Tong’s team wrapped up 4th with Indi Conlan’s team coming in 5th. Raymond Bax’s team showed their skills on the Sunday and took out the Last Round winner prize of $200. Whilst many a team didn’t figure in the prize money everyone had a great time and put down some very good bowls. Full results have been posted on the website.
